Activity

1. Is there a Crisis Pregnancy Center near you? Do a bit of sleuthing to find their name and location and post this information to the online discussion thread. Is this center close to your campus? If so, what do you think about this proximity?

2. Once you post your initial findings and thoughts, then locate a comprehensive reproductive healthcare provider near you and include this information in your discussion post, as well.

John Oliver on Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Comedians Aparna Nancherla & Eliza Skinner ask, What Is a Crisis Pregnancy Center?

•Crisis Pregnancy Centers are sometimes called Pregnancy Resource Centers. Because they are not licensed medical clinics, they are not regulated by public health boards and are not bound by the privacy provisions of HIPAA.

•There are approximately 2,300 Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the United States.

There are about 600 Planned Parenthood clinics in the United States. Sexual health services they provide include contraception, sex education, cancer screening, ultrasounds, prenatal care, and STI testing.

•CPCs are not medical providers. Although they may try to look like medical clinics, staff generally have little to no medical training. Many operate with the financial support from state funding.

•Most CPCs are not legally licensed medical clinics, the staff are not licensed medical professionals, and no actual medical services are offered. Because they are not licensed medical facilities, and do not charge for services, they lack oversight and their practices fall exploit free speech as a loophole to avoid legal scrutiny. CPCs do not and will not provide contraception.
